RIP …

… Former Middleweight Champ Marvelous Marvin Hagler Dead at 66.

Yes, I am a boxing fan. It goes back to listening on the radio with my family to the Louis-Walcott championship bout in 1947, the year I turned six — and started first grade.

  1. I saw Hagler in person fight Fully Obel for the second time. He beat him worse the second time around than the first.

There's never been an avenger as fierce as Hagler. Whenever he re-fought a fighter, which he did with each of his losses and draws except one, he won. The exception was Leonard, who refused to fight him a second time.

Hagler "only" reigned for six and a half years and only defended his title 12 times, because middleweight champions refused to fight him early on.

  2. News reports are coming out that it was Hagler who retired without accepting a rematch. This is false and comes across as Leonard trying to save face. Without searching the sequence of news reports as they came out at that time, Hagler speaks from the grave through his fan page: Marvelous Marvin. Scroll all the way down to the fight with Leonard, where it days under "opponent": "Ray Leonard (Lost WBC Title, split decision, controversial 12 round, Hagler retired after Leonard would not give him a rematch)." It's another professional low blow by Leonard to use Hagler's death to make these self-serving false reports.
