Speaking of Amy ...

... she also offers An Introduction to the Literature of the Fantastic. I am very fond of Algernon Blackwood's stories. I think "The Willows" is as scary as they come.

  1. One of the scariest short stories I've ever read was Theodore Sturgeon's "It." The one actually kept me awake far into the night, afraid to go asleep.

    Another nominee: Lovecraft, "The Colour Out of Space."
