Amazing ...

... Duffy likely to be first woman to follow Tennyson and Betjeman as laureate.

By my count, nine women have been U.S. Poet Laureate.

    Would it be picky to point out that the Poet Laureate in Britain is appointed for life, and the US Poet Laureate is appointed for a year?

  2. Not at all. But Elizabeth Jennings might have been a good choice. And what about Stevie Smith? It's not as if England has wanted for first-rate poets who were women.
