'Basic Instinct' author writes book about crap art. Experience trumps theory.

  2. Whatever the hell that's supposed to mean.

Perhaps the ultimate act of intellectual sterility it may indeed be but what that's supposed to mean is that Basic Instinct is crap art, and a creator of crap art writing about anything isn't particularly exciting news. Though if I'd inverted comma'ed it, the parody might have been clearer.

The ultimate act of intellectual sterility being to explain humour.

  5. Well. I hold nor brief for Basic Instinct, though I've seen far worse movies. In fact, I notice that some people think the film, while trash, is exemplary trash. I don't see that having written it would disqualify one from writing something that was better. D.H. Lawrence wrote some pretty good stuff. He also wrote some of the worst books I've ever read (e.g., The Plumed Serpent).

Well, I agree one should be damned to literary hell for producing tripe, but Basic Instinct & the like do pretty much preclude me from any furher interest in such an 'artist's' emanations. Cos they're not really even art, they're products. Whereas Plumed Serpent is bad art.

  7. Good distinction, Failstaff, between product and art. Perhaps the people in Hollywood would do better to think of themselves as at best artisans.
