Not this guy ...

... Here's one for the men. (Hat tip, Maxine Clarke.)

Heart of Darkness is a fine work, but far from my favorite Conrad. How about Nostromo or Victory? I read Steve Coll's Ghost Wars when I was Pulitzer juror. It was one of the three we nominated. It won. It's a good book.
The interesting one on this list is Middlemarch. How'd that make it?

  1. '. . . they say they put Middlemarch in because it will "help you understand -- or at least impress -- women"--kimbofo.

    BTW, here's the link.

  2. I'm picking Victory. Nostromo is wonderful, too, but a bit more beholden to the need to work through a plot, from what I remember.

  3. Yeah, I'm with you, Levi (though Nostromo has that wondeful description of a rowboat entering "a recrudescence of obscurity" - the things one remembers). A bit of trivia: In the early '60s there was a TV adaptation of Victory starring ... Art Carney as Axel Heyst. He was quite good.
