Ignore my previous question: "Twain?" I understand your reference to Twain's disdain for all things by Austen. Well, Twain/Clemens is entitled to his opinion, even if he is wrong, which happened more often than he would have ever admitted. As a writer he is one thing; as a critic, well, he is better as a writer (which is on occasion not very good).
I agree regarding Twain as critic. I don't think Fenimore Cooper is as bad Twain says (what he wrote about him is certainly funny, but it also misses the point). I wrote the phrase with tongue planted firmly in cheek.
