Dutch Leonard, for instance, talks about his characters as though they are friends of his. I hardly suggested that Rankin did not create Rebus, by the way. The only reason anyone gives a rat's arse about Rebus or anything he does is because Rankin writes what he does. It really is all about Rankin. Very strange way to look at the author as subservient, incidental even, to his own creation.
