Frank, Judging from the photo on Critical Mass, it might be you that Banville/Black had in mind in that opening sentence, with the light illuminating the left side of your face (although I can't tell if the pink glow on the shell of your ear is angry or just a little disgruntled).
Usually when so-called literary writers go slumming and try to write genre they fail miserably.
