Well, Maxine, it sure tells you everything we need to know about Quilp. I must, when I reture, which could be any day now, spend some time again with Dickens.
You'd hate this book if you had to spend one entire semester studying it and only it, as I did in a class with Karl Kroeber at Columbia. He decided the way for us grad students to get jobs in the (then and still) declining English Ph.D. market was to have us get some publishable papers out of a seminar. I was quite ready to throw Little Nell off a cliff by the end of it.
However, Frank, I do believe we have a statue of Little Nell somewhere in Phila. I read an essay about it once in The Hudson Review, but I don't think I've ever seen it. (Obviously, I don't know Philly like Charles knew London!)
