A characteristically perceptive response ....

... to Eric Ormsby's Eliot piece by Patrick Kurp: `Beautiful Things are Rare'. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)
Patrick's opening lines got me wondering about the connection between rationalism and not believing. Like any good Jesuit-trained person I am not unacquainted with the tools of reason. And I am deeply skeptical by nature - too skeptical not to belive in God actually.
But, thinking the other morning - early morning before sunrise, while it is still quite dark, is the best time of day for reflection, and my favorite part of the day, in fact - the other morning I realized that the decisive factor - for me anyway - in determining whether something is true is a certain aesthetic rightness. The story of the world seems somehow esthetically lacking to me without God. This is not an argument for the existence of the deity, of course, and is not meant to be. It is how I feel about it. I like thinking there is a God. Especially when I am by myself in the darkness of earliest morning.
