This makes me want ...

... to read Arnold Bennett: Clayhanger.

It was one of my favourite books when a teenager. And dipping into it again recently, now I see why. It is fascinating to see with an older person's eyes, what spoke to that younger self.

If you haven't read Clayhanger, I did love it (not sure if it "travels" to the older reader, though). The book is one of three, the first being about Edwin C., the second the story of Hilda Lessaways, and the third, "These Twain" of their relationship.

Wonderful stuff. The small photo in the post is the only one I could find of the brilliant Peter McEnery playing Clayhanger in a TV production -- I did not manage to see all of it as I did not have a TV and had to go round to friends' to watch episodes, but the parts I did see were superb. Harry Andrews, remember him?, played Darius and Janet Suzman, doyenne of the Royal Shakespeare company and South African campaigner, Hilda.
