I must confess, though, that I'm getting a bit confused. It's about "the written history of Britain" and Claire describes herself as "A British writer." But Bryan (I think) considers himself English. Could someone please explain the distinctions to us poor former colonists?
British is an umbrella term for the English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish. So you can be British and one (or more, depending on your parentage) of the other four. Individual preference determines which you use to describe yourself.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Maxine. I was starting to get the impression that if one used the term British you were somehow revealing yourself as hopelessly provincial - or something like that. I just like to refer to people as they would like to be referred to.
