I'm glad it's Rider Haggard's birthday. I take is as a good omen, since I am working on piece in which figures - not hugely, but importantly.
I note also that it is the anniversary of Walter De La Mare's death. Here's his most famous poem:

Just dug out all my notes on Rider Haggard's "She" and "King Solomon's Mines." I was trying to find something else, and they turned up. Great old imperialist adventure stories and clearly among the inspirations for the much-less great Indiana Jones....What are you writing about Haggard?
