A fresh list ...

... Five Books I Wish I Hadn't Read. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

One good thing about retirement is that I don't feel obligated to finish a book I find gives me no pleasure. Of course, I still review, so I had to finish Marilynne Robinson's Home and Ian Buruma's The China Lover, neither of which I would have continued reading otherwise. I didn't finish Per Petterson's To Siberia. I loved Out Stealing Horses, but found this one tedious.

  1. Hi Frank,

This brings up a question I was just asked via e-mail.

As the game changes, where would an author send a book for review?

The poet who has a new book out, said that if she did not hear from me, she would assume I was stumped as well.

  2. Given the number of blogs concerned with poetry - and lit blogs in general - I wouldn't discount alerting them to a new book. And The Inquirer does still review poetry and so does the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The idea is to get some buzz started.

  3. Thanks, Frank.

I'll pass word along. This is a very useful note.
