I have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning.
I love how this note of seeming optimism carries with it implicit regret -- that the yearning for "one more try," for "a fresh start" likely has its roots in sad remembrance.
I admire Priestley's cheerful outlook about each day's promise of fresh magic; however, my admiration is tempered by my too fresh memories of someone with cancer who died slowly and horribly, and while I do not know if she could have fully embraced Priestley, I was dumb-struck by her resilient willingness to find something positive to hold on to each day. So, with that in mind, it is clear to me that Priestley and the cancer patient were on to something sublimely important.
I think that optimism came from watching the love that bloomed between his sister and best friend. A lot of people thought his reluctance to dive into sexual relationships indicated his latent homosexuality (e.g., like, how did he never bang Valerie?!); but I always felt he was longing for a lasting relationship, inspired by what Brenda and Dylan had.
Luckily, *every* day is a new day!
