Scribes and pharisees ...

... The Cult of Insincerity.

Whenever I am in France, I read the French newspapers (the French read fewer newspapers than any other nation in the western world, by the way).
How might those American journalists who keep telling us how essential the newspaper is to our intellectual well-being square this with their admiration for the French as so much more civilized and sophisticated than Americans are? Perhaps the decline in newspaper circulation in this country has more to do with Americans' increasing sophistication and broadness of culture than with anything else. Perhaps the more like French you become, the less likely you are to read a newspaper.

But the real highlight of this article is this: "moral exhibitionism - generosity of spirit at other people’s expense." I can see this becoming a classic.
