Dutch elm disease did in the trees along the old Roosevelt Boulevard when I was in high school (and when that superhighway really was a tree-lined boulevard). I believe it also did a job on the American chestnut (Longfellow's "spreading chestnut tree") though a little bit of genetic engineering seems to have brought that back from mere shrubbery (don't tell the environmental Pharisees, though).
