I agree. I think that's a lot more true than most people either believe or want to admit. It lies at the root of a lot of political and philosophical argument—which is often ironic, because the ideas that people often cling to most strongly are not really their own, but received wisdom they've adopted. In a parallel way, it's well-known that there's no zealot like a recent convert, be it to religion, ideology, or whatever.
