Have I ever reviewed a self-published book? Well, last summer, I wrote an entire article about one in The Inquirer's Currents section. Given how godawful David Guterson's Ed King was, it is certainly not true that a noted imprint is any guarantee of quality. Technology has brought about a sea change in publishing and everyone's going to have to get used to that. More will have to be rounded up than the usual suspects. If I were given charge of a book review publication, I would make sure to have someone covering the self-publishing beat.

The Los Angeles Review of Books:
ReplyDelete"We recognize that advancements in digital technology have made self-publishing a viable alternative to traditional publishing, and that there are many books of quality published in this way. However, there are few literary journals that review books in this growing and potentially important field. Our goal is to publish at least one review of a self-published book per month throughout the year."

"BOOK REVIEWS FROM KIRKUS INDIE
ReplyDelete"Since 1933, Kirkus has been one of the most trusted and authoritative voices in book discovery. Our Indie program curates the self-published segment of the industry to help consumers and industry influencers (such as publishers, agents, film producers, librarians and booksellers) discover books they may otherwise never find."
