When I started writing, I had a propensity to use "fancy" words more, in order to impress the reader with the range of my vocabulary. But I realised eventually that those words were not conveying what I intended to say, rather I was using them to cover up my lack of something substantial to say. When this dawned on me, I became a better writer, and words, fancy or otherwise, started falling into their "proper place".
