Newspaper Editors: Getting it right for over 150 years ...
The author of the thumbs-down review was Oramel Barrett, editor of what was then called the Daily Patriot and Union. He was my great-great-grandfather.
The “few appropriate remarks” President Abraham Lincoln
was invited to deliver at the dedication of a national cemetery in
Gettysburg are remembered today as a masterpiece of political oratory.
But that’s not how Oramel viewed them back in 1863.
“We pass over the silly remarks of the President,” he wrote in his
newspaper. “For the credit of the nation, we are willing that the veil
of oblivion shall be dropped over them and that they shall no more be
repeated or thought of.”
