Secular parochialism …

… beyond eastrod: Problem: teaching Flannery O'Connor's short story, "A Good Man Is Hard to Find," in an increasingly secularized culture.

I can tell you from classroom experience that a significant percentage of students remain silent and confused about this story. They simply do not see the Christian "message" that I present to them on behalf of Flannery O'Connor. Many students seem to believe that I am inventing a "meaning" that does not exist. These same students are content to read the story as a grotesque and oddly humorous murder tale.
This makes me wonder why such "students" even bother to attend college, since they apparently aren't interested in learning anything that does not confirm what they think they already know.
