Do you have a source for that quotation, Frank? It sounds un-18th-century to me. A hundred quote sites attribute it to Sterne (without providing a source), but I found one that attributed it to some other Laurence guy (Olivier) and did give a (secondary) source for it: http://izquotes.com/quote/177844
Maybe the Sterne attribution is correct, after all. But Laurence Olivier morphing into Laurence Sterne seems more in keeping with the internet's approach to evidence.
