I personally think the only epistemically defensible position is Agnosticism, not atheism. Related to this, I think it is unfortunate because, as a Hopeful Agnostic, I tend to think it’s precisely here—in the realm of uncertainty between Belief and Disbelief—where the really interesting questions are in philosophy of religion.
I would say that the stronger epistemic position is theism. As mathematician
John Lennox says,
"the mathematical intelligibility of nature is evidence for a rational spirit behind the universe." It seems more in accordance with things as we experience them to presume a Logos or Tao.
