Literary ventriloquism …

This beguiling account of the “many lives” and loves of fictional British photographer Amory Clay takes its title from a quotation by a French novelist, Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau—only Charbonneau, too, is fictional, popping up as one of Amory’s lovers.
