In The Invention of Russia, Arkady Ostrovsky, Russian bureau chief for The Economist, attempts to explain just how we got here, tracing the trajectory from Mikhail Gorbachev’s liberal reforms to Putin’s “autocratic police state.” It is a grandiose ambition, and Ostrovsky is as well-placed as anybody to attempt such a book: Russian-born and educated, he studied theater in Moscow before switching to a career as a journalist for Western publications in the 1990s.
