Sympathetic, but hitherto silent, colleagues say the attempt to destroy Fulton Brown is part of a larger invasion into the discipline by activist academics, who see their role as arbiters of moral taste, determined to rid the field of infidels who refuse to bow to social justice. You’ve read stories before about academics at war over free speech with their own institutions. This is different. It’s the story of a professor who has taken on her entire academic field, with no backing whatsoever from the University of Chicago, an institution that prides itself on its commitment to free speech and academic freedom. What’s more, the crazy bitch might even win.Imagine. Thinking that we should study the Middle Ages to find out what they were actually like.

In case you wondered …
… Why The Battle For Medieval Studies Matters To America - DANGEROUS.
"Has taken on her entire academic field". In plain English, to the extent I could follow the story, she has been complained of by various persons, who may or may not be as ridiculous as portrayed, but who have apparently had no effect but to make themselves feel righteous. The professor is secure in her tenure at Chicago, the initial assailant didn't catch on at Vassar, and Mark Zuckerberg's sister--well, actually I forget that part.
ReplyDeleteBut by golly I am deeply impressed by the weight that The Daily Beast (unless of course it was The Huffington Post) has in the medieval studies departments of America.
