Certain books -- and authors -- weren't even listed, to my amazement. I'll tell you which British book has hung with me for years, and I'd certainly put it in this top ten list:
_Passing On_ by Penelope Lively
Anyone besides me read this novel? It is amazing, a mon avis.
And to add, I remember leafing thru a book by Burgess of his favourite novels of, more or less, the twentieth century. Aldous Huxley featured prominently, and I remember a glowing review of Riddley Walker. "This is what literature is meant to be". Shame on me but the only Burgess I've read is Clockwork Orange...must get hold of Earthly Powers
