The best abroad ...

... Robert McCrum wonders: What's the best novel in the past 25 years? That is, British, Irish or Commonwealth. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

There are more interesting books here than on the NYT's list. My pick, by the way, would have been Earthly Powers.

Certain books -- and authors -- weren't even listed, to my amazement. I'll tell you which British book has hung with me for years, and I'd certainly put it in this top ten list:

    _Passing On_ by Penelope Lively

Anyone besides me read this novel? It is amazing, a mon avis.

And to add, I remember leafing thru a book by Burgess of his favourite novels of, more or less, the twentieth century. Aldous Huxley featured prominently, and I remember a glowing review of Riddley Walker. "This is what literature is meant to be". Shame on me but the only Burgess I've read is Clockwork Orange...must get hold of Earthly Powers
