I think that as soon as this generation of publication 'gatekeepers' dies off there will be more recognition of women. OK, maybe it'll take two generations.
The gatekeepers have let too many bad writers, male and female, in because they are pals or lovers or acolytes.
What is needed are publishers, editors, and critics who recognize and value great writing, not cronyism.
To ascribe the dearth of good writing to anything but cronyism and poor financial investment and prioriities is to wholly miss the point and stroke oneself with PC nonsense.
Nothing is as passe as thinking "PC" is a daring, conclusive putdown. Nothing is as wearisome as trumpeting indifferent writers as great, male or female. Nothing is so degrading to the reader and the writer as the sorts of insults and bellowing that have characterized this debate.
Skip it, and read a good book or even a great one instead.
