"Once you put this book down ...

... you just can't pick it up again." That's how Mark Twain once reviewed a Henry James novel. Some readers just don't connect to some books: On the shelf: the books you can't finish. (Hat tip, Rus Bowden.)

I didn't get especially far with Don Quixote. Fully prepared to bathe in its greatness but tobh found it much over-rated and a little ....searching for word not so strong as tedious. I remember it getting some big award for greatest novel ever recently which seems to me to be a safe and political choice, when compared with a work like Brothers Karamozov, for example.

My favorite quote on Henry James' novels was the one made by Henry Adams' wife, Clover: "Poor Henry [J.]," she said, "He chews more than he bites off."
