... I heard recently that Bryden Thomson's recording of the six Martinu symphonies was the best around. I just got it and have listened to the fourth. Thomson gets everything right. It is stunningly great. If you don't know these works, there is major gap in your cultural life. Martinu may not have been the greatest composer of the 20th century - though he is my candidate for the title - but no 20th-century is any greater than he was.
