Our authority for this is Sam Harris, whose scientific credentials and achievements are ... I forget. Oh, he doesn't have any. There is an epidemic of scientific ignorance in the United States. This isn’t surprising, as very few scientific truths are self-evident, and many are counterintuitive.
Yes he does. He has the achievment of getting you to waste your time blabbering on about him.

ReplyDeleteFrancis Collins is an accomplished scientist and a man who is sincere in his beliefs. And that is precisely what makes me so uncomfortable about his nomination.
ReplyDeleteSays it all, doesn't it? I think the reason why people like Harris think science is in the details is that the big pictures it advances make less and less sense.
Ah, but my dear Anonymous, that is hardly a scientific achievement. Bear in mind, my post got you to do much the same thing about me.
ReplyDeleteNo special scientific qualifications are required to make a general observation about science like "very few scientific truths are self-evident, and many are counterintuitive". Observing the sun move across the sky and then learning that it is the earth that is moving would enable that. On the other hand, to dismiss the views of most scientists on a particular, technical scientific issue (say, global warming)... I suppose your own background in advanced science qualifies you to do that?
