Well if Amis has his way, there'll be euthanasia booths on every street corner, more populous even than public lavatories, to dispose of the elderly or those leading negative existences, so from that ideal state of affairs it's a very subtle and short step towards the right kind of people realising & deciding who are leading these 'negative' existences, & pointing/shoving them in the right direction. Amis compared the 'stinking' elderly to 'horrible immigrants', so these would be high on the list. Where Coetzee fits in the hierarchy of negativity one would have to ask Amis.
