Well, maybe ...

... Joyce's Ulysses: The only chapter worth reading. - By Ron Rosenbaum - Slate Magazine. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

I tend to agree that "Ulysses is best looked upon as a grab bag of great riffs and long stretches of tedious pretentiousness," but I think the riffs outweigh the stretches. Among my own favorites is the Nausicaa chapter, because of the heartbreak behind the sexual comedy.
