[Kinkade's] brother Patrick has spoken of his "Victorian Christmas" (1992), which depicts a house they knew as children. "It was a fine house with fine people living there, with big parties," Patrick says. "Tom and I would stand outside the gates and say, 'That's the kind of house I want to live in.' We were always on the outside of the gate looking in." That's the genius of Kinkade's paintings: They keep us on the outside, where we can gaze longingly at cozy, secure homes.
