The argument’s finer points were lost on most of the media, which seized on a handful of phrases deployed to describe the plight of the Duchess of Cambridge as she negotiates the trap-laden path that is royal womanhood. She “appeared to have been designed by a committee ... with a perfect plastic smile”. She was “as painfully thin as anyone could wish, without quirks, without oddities”. She seems, in contrast with Diana, Princess of Wales, “precision-made, machine-made ... capable of going from perfect bride to perfect mother, with no messy deviation”.Well, this strikes me as pretty personal, pretty subjective, and pretty insulting.
