… the turbulent 1970s were succeeded not by a new depression but by the Reagan-era boom of the 1980s, in which the Boomers metamorphosed into new folk heroes/villains, the Yuppies. Only the prosperous ones were noted as constituting a generation; the poor melted back into their communities.
Hmm. I find "riotous middle-age" in one of the poems in Yeats's The Green Helmet, which book was published in 1912. Without a variorum Yeats, I can't say when the poem was first published, or whether he touched it up afterwards.
ReplyDeleteBut I think we can take comfort in the experience of "The Greatest Generation". We the boomers did not especially cherish them in their vigor, but along about 1990 we came up with a collective sense of guilt, leading to such large and clunky artifacts as the WW II Memorial and the popular histories of Stephen Ambrose. No doubt we will be well mourned when we are out of the way.
I'm an in-betweener, born just before we entered the war, five years before the boomers debuted. Oddly, I feel closer Tothero earlier generation.
