 All history, especially the history of the twentieth century, argues against placing ideas in the saddle and allowing them to ride mankind. 

I have been accused of being an intellectual myself.  I don't think I am, because I think an intellectual, strictly speaking, is someone who regards ideas as ends, and I only regard them as means. I'm not sure what label I would attach to myself
