A very nice phrase, that, by a writer who, thanks to contemporaries who loved him, and though 137 years ago, in the collective conscious remains a beautiful youth.
And yet the old saying has it that at night all cats are gray. There were certainly artists at least as promising lost in that war, and some may have been almost as handsome.
