I have a number of walking sticks and and have had them for a good many years. I used to do a lot of hiking and I even have some staffs. My favorite, I guess, is the one I got in Kinsale, Ireland, after I finished my assignment in Dublin for the centenary of Bloomsday. It is an ash stick, quite like the one Stephen Daedalus (and Joyce himself) carried about. For me, carrying a stick began as a fashion statement. But not that I am old and gimpy, my stick has become a utility. It really does make walking easier.
