Still controversial after all these years …

… Solitary Praxis: A few words on the birthday of Thoreau, on the meandering babbler's 19th c. American singularity, and on the unassailable wisdom of not quarreling with God.

I am with Emerson when it comes to Thoreau: "Henry is, with difficulty, sweet." I do not think he is overrated as a writer (see the last paragraph of Walden). He is probably overrated as a naturalist. His thinking is always engaging, if not always persuasive. That we are still arguing over him proves something.
