The thing about tribes is that most of us belong to a variety of them, not necessarily overlapping or even congruent tribes, so McCabe's view of size-bolstering and maintaining cohesion is only partially true and rather too simplistic.
Personally, I wouldn't define the question in terms of progress, though of course many people do, but rather in terms of competing belief systems: which belief system can help maximise human well-being and happiness?
