Study Philosophy to Improve Thinking—A Case of False Advertising?
I think it depends on the kind of philosophy being taught. I had two years of philosophy courses — logic, metaphysics, rational psychology, existentialism, aesthetics, and the history of philosophy (the text was Copleston, the course took two years). I also studied under an outstanding professor — Edward Gannon, S.J., for whom philosophy was practice, not just logic-chopping and idle speculation. So for me the study of philosophy has proved invaluable
I still have my complete Copleston. It has travelled with me across several continents.
ReplyDeleteI still have mine as well.
