I find that quote by Lawrence intriguing (not to mention funny), and wonder if there are levels of stream-of-consciousness writing, such as the kind that distinguishes, say, Lawrence himself from Joyce or Proust. Is the inwardness for a higher purpose or is it merely navel-gazing? I would be very interested in an answer to this question.
