Hmm …

…  as a medium, books are surprisingly bad at conveying knowledge, and readers mostly don’t realize it.



Well, the book doesn't disappear. You can pick it up and refresh your memory. It is a storage system, after all. I've spent more than 50 years summarizing books in reviews, and I find I retain a certain sound overall sense of what is contained therein. For more detail, I take them down off the shelf and look through them again.
