Inarticulate?

Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit has a post with an extensive quote from the transcipt of the President's news conference today. Hard to read this -- complete with a reference to John Barry's excellent The Great Influenza -- and not wonder about the conventional wisdom regarding George W. Bush's smarts. Seems to me there's quite a command of the facts on display, as well as pretty sound syntax.

  1. I only cited what I cited, not the master's entire oeuvre. I will mention that a former colleague of mine, a devout liberal who worked for many years at the Washington Post, says that when W worked in his father's administration, he was described as "sounding like any other Yale grad." Add to that his supposed remark to his campaign manager following his only political defeat (a run for Congress) -- "Guess a Yale accent won't carry you too far in west Texas" -- and you begin to wonder.

  2. Frank, I had the pleasure of interviewing both Mr. and Mrs. George W. when they were Governor and First Lady of Texas ...

I have experienced, first-hand, the gaffes ... but I have also experienced moments of surprisinf wit, delivered off-the-cuff, without any preparation, and correctly ...

I enjoyed those encounters, and would love to interview them again ... but the chances of that, nowadays, are slim.
