"The Beast in the Jungle" is my favorite James, too. Well, okay, I also *really* like _The Aspern Papers_. "Beast," however, reminds us all to live NOW, not later, in some hopefully better future. It really is now or never, as Terry Teachout underscores in the other post you linked to.
