I've only read Sophie's Choice of his books -- I found it horrific and powerful but too long. I thought the WW2 bits worked better than the modern part.
I read the Times obit on the train on the way to work this morning, a very interesting piece.
I believe his best book was his memoir about depression, _Darkness Visible_. He really began the genre of such memoirs -- his came out in about 1990 and then there was a deluge of similar books (_An Unquiet Mind_, _The Noonday Demon_, and so on and so son). Styron did a lot to get rid of the stigma of depression with DV, and it is also a very beautifully written book.

My sentiments exactly, Maxine. And I detested the film.
