Jeez, Louise. This is a sign of how far out of the academic world I am now -- I used to routinely attend the MLA convention, giving papers there, trotting to job interviews, listening to horribly boring papers with sexy, erotic titles. And I didn't even know it's in the city I live in this week until I read it here! I guess I didn't notice the extra contingent of badly dressed, nervous people.
Funny how I don't miss it *at all*. But today I had lunch with another recovering academic --and I first met him at an MLA convention! -- and he tells me the hot new topic in literary theory (he's still at a university, though teaching law) is "Fat Studies." I love that. The new victim -- an obese American! With humorless academic papers being devoted to his or her quivering extra flesh. The mind boggles!

Let me amend that -- Richard is a recovering *English* professor (taught at Haverford College & Bryn Mawr); he's still an academic, I suppose.
